Learning Coffee Vocabulary at Starbucks
Hi, everyone! I'm Ariannita la Gringa, and today I'm at Starbucks. You can see their famous logo behind me. Starbucks is known all over the world.
Why Starbucks?
You might wonder why I'm here. I want to teach you some coffee vocabulary. Ordering coffee can be tricky, especially at Starbucks. They have many sizes and types of drinks. So, let’s learn together!
Fun Facts About Starbucks
Did you know the first Starbucks opened in 1971 in Seattle, Washington? Now, there are over 33,833 stores worldwide! About 15,000 of those are in the USA. Do you have a Starbucks in your city? Let me know!
Coffee Basics
Before we order, let’s learn about coffee beans. A coffee bean is a seed from a coffee plant. Coffee plants grow in places like Venezuela, Colombia, and Guatemala. They also grow in Africa, especially in Ethiopia.
Next, we have the roast. A roast is how coffee beans are dried to bring out their flavor. There are three types of roasts: light, medium, and dark. You can even scan the barcode on coffee packages to see where the beans come from!
Types of Coffee
Now, let’s talk about different types of coffee. There are hot and cold coffees. Here are some hot coffees:
- Americano: Two shots of espresso with hot water.
- Macchiato: Espresso with a bit of milk foam.
- Latte: Espresso with steamed milk and milk foam.
- Cappuccino: Similar to a latte but with more milk foam.
- Mocha: Espresso with chocolate and steamed milk.
For cold coffee, we have:
- Iced Americano
- Iced Mocha
- Iced Latte
- Frappuccino: A blended drink with ice, milk, and flavors.
Ordering Coffee
When ordering, you can choose caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee. I love banana bread, which costs $3.95.
Here’s how I ordered my coffee: “Hi, I’d like a tall white chocolate mocha, please.” The barista asked if I wanted it hot or iced. I chose hot. My total was $9.43.
Enjoying My Coffee
I received my tall white chocolate mocha and banana bread. I used a coffee stopper to keep my drink hot. This stopper can also stir your coffee!
At Starbucks, sizes are different. A small is called "tall," a medium is "grande," and a large is "venti." It can be confusing!
Conclusion
I hope you enjoyed learning about coffee vocabulary with me today. Remember, "Ordering coffee can be tricky, but it’s fun to learn!"
Now, go ahead and try ordering your favorite coffee. Let me know what you like to order at Starbucks or any coffee shop. See you next week!
